I am a textile artist and designer-maker living and working in Penzance, Cornwall. I create decorative or wearable pieces which combine photography with textiles.
My work starts with photography, either as a single image or as a pattern. The image is transferred on to organic fabric using eco-friendly pigment inks. I incorporate antique, vintage and repurposed materials in to my work, with a particular focus on mending and customising existing garments. I strive to create as little waste as possible.
I have always felt an affinity with textiles. Fabrics have a fugitive quality, they fade with light and time along with wear and use but they can be infinitely repaired with layers and stitch, developing their own individual story while becoming something entirely unique.
If you would like any further information about my work or if you have something in particular that you would like repairing, customising or commissioning, it would be great to hear from you.
Background
I fell in love with textiles at a very young age and I have been passionate about them ever since.
Born in Stratford-upon-Avon, I left school at eighteen after completing my A-Levels. At that time, I didn’t feel the need to take my education to degree level, instead I amassed experience in both private and public sector organisations in SEO, marketing, PR, development, copywriting, publishing and as a clothing and footwear buyer / developer. Alongside my work I took various courses in textiles, floristry, web design, ceramics, printmaking and French (still terrible), to name but a few.
I started selling my textile work in local galleries, following a move to Cornwall in 2004.
After the birth of my daughter in 2010, I created a blog and then established a business making textiles for children. I undertook everything myself from the designing and making of the products to the styling, photography and promotion.
A few years later, I switched focus and became a freelance creative specialising in photography, styling, textiles, interiors, design and writing for clients in the likes of retail, hospitality and the creative industries.
On occasion, I have bought and sold vintage / antique clothing, accessories and homewares, as well as other handmade pieces.
Mostly self-taught and an ‘outsider’ of sorts, I have immersed myself in lifelong practice and play. My creative practice has been, and continues to be, the constant and essential part of my life.
