behind the scenes

I started on a new piece this week.

Inspiration comes from many places but mainly books. I have a particular fondness for interiors books from the 1990s, however, I love anything filled with colour and pattern.

The starting point for this piece was antique white lace - although not colourful, the pattern and texture is simply beautiful.

This lace usually hangs from a shelf in my studio, which is where I photographed it. I used this photograph to create a pattern which was then printed on to fabric.

The next step is creating more layers of pattern and colour on the fabric using illustration.

It will take me some time to illustrate the fabric before I can move on to the final stages. This is a slow process but thoroughly satisfying.
